Exit as Stage Prop
Before opponents of continued American involvement in Iraq elevate their hopes too much over what appears to be new-found vigor in congressional Democrats baiting Republicans into a filibuster on a resolution for a troop withdrawal timetable
, it might be worth the effort to read what Time magazine
has to say about what's really going on behind the scenes in Washington.
The all-nighter is a public relations stunt by the Democrats stung by growing voter dissatisfaction with their inabilityor, less charitably, unwillingnessto change the course of the nation in either its international affairs or its domestic trajectory. The Tuesday all-nighter is a golden, well-staged, carefully planned setup to force Republicans into a show so constituents can see that something is being done, and that something is being done by the hard-working opposition party as it tries just about anything to get past the virtually impenetrable obstacle of an obstinate President and his loyal allies.
Here's the reality: this spectacle, produced by Sen. Harry Reid and his merry band of followers, will materially change nothing whatsoever
, either about the course of the American-Iraqi War or about how the Democrats in Congress and the Bush Administration are going to get their respective wishes granted, all while Iraq, itself, continues to disintegrate, taking a good chunk of the Middle East around it into the maelstrom of political instability, sectarian mini-wars, massive refugee movements, homegrown and imported violence, and finallyfor the home team's consumptiona direct military confrontation between the United States and Iran that at least some powerful Democrats, as well as Republicans, already know is virtually inevitable.
Oh, yes, American soldiers will be continuing to die in our favorite, home-away-from-home, God-forsaken Mesopotamian Hell-hole while the political theater currently running in the Capitol Building plays itself out for the C-Span crowd and the Sunday talking heads circuit.
More solemnly than even that, American soldiers (and a whole lot more Iraqis) will still
be dying next week, next month, and for the foreseeable future. The Democrats cannot stop this. All they can do is make sure the show they're putting on gets better, lest people start looking for the real
exit from the theater instead of the phony prop the Democrats use for their grand and repeated entries to the stage of battle with a President who is more than their match.
Is the above an unduly, unfairly harsh assessment? Count the bodies of dead American soldiers between now and the end of the year; then ask, "How many fewer would there have been if the Democrats had begun impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush and Richard V. Cheney on Tuesday, July 17, 2007?"
Of course, one might argue that timing is everything in politics.
To the next dead American soldier, though, timing means nothing.
The Dark Wraith has spoken.
DW: I think you've nailed it completely. I don't think these wars will end no matter who's president. The issue is how many wars? How much death? By what date does the Euro replace the USD as the world's reserve currency? I do believe that had Martin Frost beaten Pelosi for minority leader when Gephardt quit, you'd see a little more sincere aggression as opposed to this circus acts. Reid's a useless shill for the casino industry.
Which brings me to my real question. I am pondering a good-sized fade of Barack Obama for Democratic Presidential nominee in both the futures and the outright markets. I'm short for part of it at 30.8 cents-on-the-dollar. Market now around 28.7. I have all sorts of soft information that political junkies would like, but the essence of the play is that places with any depth dealing both Democratic Nominee markets and Outright Presidential markets have made some pricing errors on both Obama and Clinton between their Nomination and Winner books because of the large size of Obama's 2nd quarter report and because of the additional value embedded in the Edwards, Richardson or Gore re-draw options, the Obama naked short was the most efficient way to play in a mean-variance sense.
Everyone of these suckers love war. That's not the issue, though it should be. I'm a stone-cold capitalist as you are, but Marx was right about a few things, and dialectical materialsm was one of them. Unfortunately, a sensible synthesis cannot obtain when there exists no two or more opposing forces. So, I'm going to try to make some money out of the realpolitik. Much more death with either of these hawks as President. Clinton can out debate Obama, out think him, take a punch better, campaign more carefully, and has The Big Dog, while the best side-man Obama has is Colin Powell! I don't know that Obama's a true favorite against the coupled-entry of the re-draw candidates for the nomination.
I'm sorry to be so crass about this, but that's what we capitalists do. We look to beat the price.
"Count the bodies of dead American soldiers between now and the end of the year; then ask, 'How many fewer would there have been if the Democrats had begun impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush and Richard V. Cheney on Tuesday, July 17, 2007?' "
Unfortunately, I think a lot of us will be asking ourselves that question at the end of the year.
Count the bodies of dead American soldiers between now and the end of the year; then ask, "How many fewer would there have been if the Democrats had begun impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush and Richard V. Cheney on Tuesday, July 17, 2007?"
We know this isn't going to happen, though. What possible reason would Nancy Pelosi have pursue such a course of action? She is funded by LockheedMartin and her daughter made a Bush 2000 campaign film.
There is an idea, pure fantasy of course, but no less fanstasy than impeachment, which might work. We both know, DW, that "the rich" are hardly monolithic and there is no shortage of extraordinarily wealthy people who loathe Bush and Cheney and their barbarism. What if that segment of "the rich" were to obtain a copy of the "blind" trusts operated by Farish & Company for Bush and Cheney and just took the OPPOSITE position of every one of their holdings and added on until these monsters ended these wars? A CAPITALIST REVOLUTION, IF YOU WILL.
I HEARD one who said: "Verily,
What word have I for children here?
Your Dollar is your only Word,
The wrath of it your only fear.
"You build it altars tall enough
To make you see but you are blind;
You cannot leave it long enough
To look before you or behind.
"When Reason beckons you to pause,
You laugh and say that you know best;
But what it is you know, you keep
As dark as ingots in a chest.
"You laugh and answer, 'We are young;
Oh, leave us now, and let us grow:'
Not asking how much more of this
Will Time endure or Fate bestow.
"Because a few complacent years
Have made your peril of your pride,
Think you that you are to go on
Forever pampered and untried?
"What lost eclipse of history,
What bivouac of the marching stars,
Has given the sign for you to see
Milleniums and last great wars?
"What unrecorded overthrow
Of all the world has ever known,
Or ever been, has made itself
So plain to you, and you alone?
"Your Dollar, Dove, and Eagle make
A Trinity that even you
Rate higher than you rate yourselves;
It pays, it flatters, and it's new.
"And though your very flesh and blood
Be what the Eagle eats and drinks,
You'll praise him for the best of birds,
Not knowing what the eagle thinks.
"The power is yours, but not the sight;
You see not upon what you tread;
You have the ages for your guide,
But not the wisdom to be led.
"Think you to tread forever down
The merciless old verities?
And are you never to have eyes
To see the world for what it is?
"Are you to pay for what you have
With all you are?"--No other word
We caught, but with a laughing crowd
Moved on. None heeded, and few heard.

"The Ramstein air base in southwestern Germany, long the largest US nuclear storehouse in Europe, has been completely emptied of its atomic arsenal according to experts who say the weapons are out of the country."
Memo to self: always double up on anti-depressants before entering 'The Dark Wraith Forums-The 11th Circle.
DW, how long would this farce continue, where the situations reversed? Nuclear option, anyone? (Procedural...not KABOOM, yet.)
a belated good morning dw,
time magazine? the new arbiter of reality? it could all be true, but only by a mistake in time. i'm as cynical as the next guy, and i extend that attitude toward time.
and the dems.
Good morning, Roger.
Not to worry, good man. I place no special credence in Time; however, the essential point of that article comports with what I am hearing from other, generally credible sources about the behind-the-scenes maneuvering. The Democrats (most of them, anyway, especially in the ranks of the power brokers) have for years been laboring under an old paradigm that models the actions of all elected officials as nothing more than politics and positioning to appease and appeal to select constituent bases. The Democrats have, as a collective institution, been utterly incapable of seeing everything from the "Republican Revolution" onward as something far graver to the health of the Republic; and for that folly, we are taken at every election cycle--indeed, in every day--farther and farther from the shores of the hopeful nation always reaching to (and always, of course, coming short of) a better time tomorrow.
In that way, the Democrats are like the walking dead: they see what they want to see, yet are, even in that permanent and irretrievable state, able to stay with the living, even as more and more of the living join them in the world beyond hope.
The Dark Wraith wishes it were otherwise of the leaders of Congress.
