Good Evening, Dark Wraith. Have we not learned anything from the Boston Massacre? Kids in a military area equals riots, fighting, and bad news. I'm not saying this is the kids fault for being at the wrong place at the wrong time of a tank rolling by, it's jsut the only thing I thought of. However, it makes one think of how greatly we're impacting Iraq's citizens, especially the children. We take a lot of things for granted, I'm not sure if I could handle my kids being chased by a tank. Soldiers are the only victims of shell shock. Just liek our own children, we have to be conserned of Iraq's future too.... especially since be kind of busted into their present.
A nuance in that picture strikes me as telling. Those kids, despite the fact that they'd been throwing stones at the tank, were no threat whatsoever. They didn't even understand that running away was the single worst thing they could have done. Had they been seasoned fighters, they would have gotten under the gun and then made their escape where it wasn't taking aim.
As it was, they (and the photographer, too, of course), would have been butchered if the cannoneer had fired.
You're right, obviously: kids deserve better than this. I wonder if the leaders of Israel and the Palestinians really understand that simple fact.
The Dark Wraith also wonders how many people here in the United States really understand that simple fact.
It is to the point where all of our kids are being "groomed" for war. Becoming desensitized to the violence and learning to enjoy the act of "killing" or other absolute horror thru all the games, etc. Mine are no exception I am sorry to say, but they laugh me off when I express my disgust.
But the car crash ones are fun..hmm so that makes me a participant.
One of my favorite personal stories from more than a few years back is one of an adolescent boy I knew quite well. He was thoroughly obsessed with games like Doom and Quake. Out of nowhere one evening while we were talking, he solemnly explained to me that he knew "a whole lot more" about combat than I possibly could, considering how he'd spent so many (quite literally) thousands of hours on battlefields and such in his games.
I did not dispute his assertion, of course.
As a footnote, by the way, that boy has now grown to be a young man. He's a big supporter of the war in Iraq and of violence as a general solution.
He hasn't enlisted, though. He doesn't have a particularly good explanation for that, but I have my suspicions. As I recall, the time I took him with me when I was going to test a black powder rifle, he almost evacuated his bladder when the first shot was fired.
He also hated it when I even barely raised my voice to him.
He remains a quite sensitive fellow, as he was in his youth.
The Dark Wraith will leave unspoken the generalizations that could be made from that story.
What a terrifying picture. It makes me want to know what happened. Did the boys get fired upon? Did the tank roll on by without firing? It must be difficult to live in countries that have daily explosions occuring, and it's no wonder so many join to fight either side. Hostilities are deeply beaten into them from what they see and live through.
Fortunately for the kids, the tank crew chose not to fire. The photographer who took this picture wouldn't have been alive to publish it were the cannon to have been set loose in that contained corridor into which the kids were running. That main gun unleashes an unbelievable amount of fury: even in an open field, the sound, heat, and concussion are enough to take the snot out of a close by-stander's face.
The crew inside the tank in that picture was just using the gun (in this case) to say, "Beat it," to the boys.
As is evident, they did so.
The Dark Wraith usually prefers a less hardware-oriented method of shooing away pesky, stone-throwing munchkins.
The picture was utterly depressing and it should have been the background photo on the evening news across America. The reality people need more members. Misery loves company.
Whew, you know I've been gone too long, when the post I came here to comment on has passed from view! I haven't had that much time at home for blogging lately, and your posts are way to complicated to get into at work.
The mideast is in flames, and frat boy is busy going: "Yo, Poodle, good rolls, huh?" while Darth Cheney intones: "This war is going to be with us for a long, long time." If we don't get any traction this election cycle, we hafta either march on DC, or head for the hills. I still don't know which.

OMG!
Can't imagine what it's like to have a tank barrel pointed at me, but I don't think it would make a positive impression.
I've lived where I wasn't wanted, these kids deserve better.
Good evening, Debra.

Good evening, Dark Muz.
The lessons of war are most strongly impressed upon the young.
That's why these kids will very likely grow up to wage war.
The Dark Wraith finds heritage to be something of a mixed blessing.
Good Morning DW,

Good morning, elf.

Good afternoon, Old White Lady.

You can take it to bank; that's the last time these two play hooky from madrassa.(snark)

Get an application form for the Army. Just simply hand it to him the next time he spouts off, without saying a word.
At this point, I think it's the duty of every reality-based American.
Good afternoon Dark Wraith,
Whew, you know I've been gone too long, when the post I came here to comment on has passed from view! I haven't had that much time at home for blogging lately, and your posts are way to complicated to get into at work.
