Stock Market Flails, Refinancing Rate Fails, Oil Sails, Greenspan Wails

The stock market had a modest down day today on concerns about the looming signs of economic slowdown. Among other factors that caused the stock market to grovel around in the doldrums was the release of the monthly employee confidence index by the Hudson Highland Group, which found that the index fell to 102.0 from last month's 106.2, hitting its lowest level in a year. The sagging confidence among workers means that households are likely to become more defensive in their purchases, avoiding big-ticket items and other expenditures that would involve debt. Such a pull-back in spending will adversely affect the businesses that manufacture and sell such items, and this will lead to slower growth in the number of jobs and possibly even cause layoffs as the businesses brace for bad times ahead. Any movement by companies in the direction of lower employment levels will confirm for employees their waning confidence, leading to further pull-backs in purchases, causing more layoffs.

More bad news for stocks came as light, sweet crude oil hit $53 per barrel, worrying investors about the impact of higher gasoline and home heating oil on consumers' disposable income net of energy costs.
Crude oil is priced in terms of its quality coming out of the ground. A "light, sweet" crude is high grade, while a "heavy, sour" crude is low grade.
With the price of gasoline now approaching the high-water marks it hit last year, the impact could go well past higher prices at the pump, since oil prices are reflected in energy costs paid by manufacturers, too, which will adversely affect bottom-line profits, especially of companies that are energy intensive or transport oriented, including most firms in the manufacturing sector.

Further evidence of the effect of rising interest rates throughout the economy was reported Wednesday by the Mortgage Bankers Association, which said that refinancing applications in the week ending February 25 fell another 2.4 percent, after a drop of more than half-a-percent the week before.
In interest rate terminology, one basis point is one one-hundredth of a percent. Hence, one full percent is one hundred basis points.
Homeowners' loss of appetite for refinancings has repercussions on the banking system, which earns revenues by originating these loans. The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage for the period rose seven basis points to reach almost five and three-quarters percent and showed no signs of slowing its march into territory that will ultimately stifle both the new and exisiting homes markets, possibly bringing about the much-anticipated burst of the housing market bubble that has concerned economists for some months now. Because the residential homes market is such a large part of the overall consumer component of the economy, a sudden skid in prices caused by lower demand for homes would send shockwaves throughout the economy.

In other news, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan warned that the large and continuing budget deficits are a "problem" for sustained and robust growth of the U.S. economy. Although Chairman Greenspan did not and likely would not lay blame upon any one person or group, many outside observers cannot help but point out the hole of federal budget deficits has been dug by a Republican White House and both Houses of Congress squarely under the control of the same political party, a party which has for years posed as the bastion of fiscal responsibility in a political system where the opposition party was accused of being fiscally irresponsible. As well as failing to note that it is the Republicans in general and the Bush Administration in particular that are at fault for the string of record federal budget deficits, Mr. Greenspan did not contrast George W. Bush's budgeting skills to those of former President Bill Clinton, whose Administration ran federal budget surpluses in its final years

Although the Federal Reserve Board in general, and the Chairman of the Fed in particular, want to give the appearance of non-partisanship in analysis and recommendations, some outside observers cannot help but wonder at what point an Administration that fails on objective grounds should no longer be spared open and harsh criticism by officials whose responsibility lies with the nation and not with the incompetent President.

As a side comment upon the grim state of the world in these times, the BBC is reporting that Bill gates is to be knight; his specific title will be Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

You may not address him as "Sir Gates," since he is not a subject of the Crown, but when addressing him in writing, you must write "Bill Gates, KBE" in respectful recognition of his status.

The Dark Wraith thought you would all like to know this.

I find it a little embarrassing that we still hand out titles such as "Knight Commander of the Order of The British Empire".

I'm not sure that giving someone an award that puts them in charge of some sheep farmers in the South Atlantic, a bunch of drunken louts in the Med and a dozen or so bird shit covered rocks dotted around the Pacific is really very flattering.

Liz, dear - "Knight" is good enough. The Yanks will still think it's quaint, and the tourists will still pony up for their tour through Buckingham Palace.

Good news for Bill, though. If that whole Microsoft thing doesn't work out he can always get a job at Medieval Times.

Good morning Dark Wraith,

Assuming for a moment that this Administration was composed of rational actors, how would they get ourselves out of this mess? I would think that raising taxes at some point would be a good start to decreasing the deficit, but what about the housing market and the oil prices? Anything? Bueller?

The other concern/question that I have is what would happen if we introduced another war (Iran or Syria) into this equation?

Good morning, John. I caught your comment just as I was about to head to a class. You're asking the big, 64-dollar questions, here, my friend: never mind how we got here; how do we escape?

This focus on policy prescriptions is the most important part to address, and I shall return later today to put some pieces of the solution into place. The good news about it all is that some of those pieces might put themselves into place, despite the best efforts of the neo-con incompetents to keep causing things to get worse.

The big wild card is a new war. If they pull that one off, the automatic stabilizers in the economy won't have a chance of doing their slow-but-almost-certain healing gig.

The Dark Wraith will return later.

Greenspan Humbled By Asia's Central Bankers

I envision that you might it useful in developing a series of pop quiz questions to test the acumen of the Knights in Economic Training.

And thank you for tenure the other day; I shall now excuse myself from further testing requirements.

Good evening, Mr. Goat.

Not so fast, there. If you think that getting tenure releases you being responsible for bringing doughnuts to the faculty meetings, you are wrong. Remember, your performance will determine whether you have an office on the second floor by the water cooler or down in the basement by the broom closet.

Now, about that article, I must make only one suggestion to our policy leaders: Please don't let George Bush II go over there and say something stupid. The Asians could, if they wanted to, instantly turn the United States into a Third World country. Let us not, in any way whatsoever, irritate them.

Oh, yes, and if Condoleeza Rice has to go over there, tell her to leave her Ho Boots at the airport. The Asians won't be any more impressed than the Europeans were.

Oh, yes, and leave Dick Cheney in the airport nursery. One of his blustering comments about "mushroom clouds" could cause a whole lot of chaos.

It seems some Asians are a bit touchy about that subject. Go figure.

Come to think of it, the Dark Wraith justs hopes the whole Bush Administration stays away from Asia.

Well I have seen some disturbing things today and in the past few days. The one I saw a few days was when I was in the airport coming back from Vancouver. The article was was from the National Post I think. It said something about the Chinese thinking about reevaluating their currency. Which as DW has discussed before any of the asian currency players could make our lives hell but if they all got together it would worst thing since GW got into office a second time.

The other thing that really has me disturbed is that Alan Greenspan seems to have either woken up much too late and see that deficits are bad or he's finally and completely lost his mind. CBS news had a clip of him talking about deficits and preaching about banishing the tax code in favor of a Consumption Tax like a VAT or a GST on a national level.

I mean why don't we bitchslap the poor and middle-class some more while letting the rich and well off get more rich and well off. It all just makes me so ill I can't hardly stand it.

Also did anyone else see the headline to day of some OPEC fool talking about the possibility of $80 a barrell oil. Spooky spooky spooky.

Oh, and I'm also strongly leaning toward moving to Vancouver for graduate school.

I really gotta get to work on that student visa paperwork.... ;)

Speaking of barrels, how many gallons are in a "barrel of oil"? Having spent time on a farm, I always thought it was 55 gallons, but isn't a barrel of oil measured differently?

Thu Mar 03, 11:48:40 PM EST
 Dark Wraith blogged...

Good evening, Gary.

Right now, either my computer is behaving very badly or Blogger is treating me like a dog; but I am trying to search the archives of this blog for the material I wrote on the Bush Administration's plans to revamp the tax code. I believe I predicted that the commission he had appointed was going to go in the direction of a VAT, and I even went so far as to predict that they would aim at one in the form of a consumption tax like a national sales tax.

Anyway, if your heart is set on Vancouver, perhaps down the road when you want to walk on the wild side, I'll set you loose on a couple of the old consulting projects I left uncompleted. They'll keep you busy for a lifetime chasing things like legendary gold shipments with cool hallmarks that no one has seen in decades. Or maybe I'll point you in the direction of the old trading program players up there in Vancouver who were telling people they could earn them 40% per week on their investments.

Lord, but I loved Vancouver back in those days, before the regulatory muscle started to come to bear.

I hear it's not as fun, anymore; but I hear it's still a great city.

As long as you're not one of the old-time players.

The Dark Wraith waxes nostalgic.

42 gallons of crude per barrel.

Good evening, Peter of Lone Tree.

I've been out of the oil and gas business for more than a few years, but I think a barrel is still a barrel; and it's a standard international unit of measure.

Which, of course, goes to show that, in order to put the U.S. economy over a barrel, you'll need 55 gallons of bull manure.

Oh, yes, and a shovel embossed with the words Brought to you by the Prince of the House of Saud and His friend, George W. Bush II.

The Dark Wraith looks into the barrel to see if Peter is doing okay in there.

I have a link to Greenspan's comments on a consumption tax, here Have these guys lost their marbles completely? Consumer confidence is already dicey- throw a consumption tax at a consumption-driven economy like this one, and you'll have a full-blown recession in no time.
(I especially liked Greenspan's comment about the need for a "hybrid" between consumption taxes and income taxes. "In other words, don't try for purity"
From the Man who compromised his own, ever since GW became President...)

Good evening, Mr. Goat.

You're right about the 42 gallon per barrel metric. The 55 was one I used in my head for a long time because it was a standard I had known from before. I even remember being told that my number of gallons per barrel was not in synch, but I kept using it, anyway, for some reason. To this day, I still do the 55 gallon thing.

The Dark Wraith cannot seem to shake old habits.

Good evening, LindiBee.

You'll notice that I touch on this rather heavily in the just-published article.

Let's just see how much of a trial balloon this is. You might notice today that Bush and some of his lackeys are now backing away from the Social Security overhaul plan. I wonder how long it will take for them to back away from a national sales tax once they figure out how complicated it would be to implement and how likely it would be to cause the kind of recession that would get a whole bunch of Democrats kicked out of office.

The Dark Wraith would, of course, like to see that happen.

Good evening, once again, Mr. Goat.

That oil thing reminded me of something I was going to ask you. Are you in the banking business by any chance? If you are, I know some old-time speculators out of Vancouver who might be looking for a particularly solvent and not-too-finicky stateside bank to do a little business in rather... shall we say... speculative metal commodities sort of stuff.

Since it looks like Gary is going to move to Vancouver, we could use him to move some gold shipments across the border and into the safe of a reputable depository institution...

Oh, that's right. Regulators.

Darn!

The Dark Wraith will have to think of some other plan to take advantage of Gary's new-found residence up there in Vancouver.

Yes, I have ties to the banking business. I have participated in the organization of a bank, I have sat on the board of a bank, and currently sit on the board of a bank holding company.

Regulators? Don't even get me started, unless you really want to see profanity. We'll save that conversation for another day on the advise of counsel.

Good afternoon, Mr. Goat.

Well, the closest I came to direct involvement in the banking business was the time I tried to buy the charter of a dead bank on the Isle of Mann. I was going to use it to project Regulation S offerings into the states for clients.

Now, if you know what I mean by that, you know quite a bit for a goat. If you know why I wanted to do that, you know way too much for a goat.

Good afternoon, OddJob.

"Colorful" doesn't even begin to describe some of the weirdness.

Suffice it to say that I am fortunate to even be alive, considering some of the misadventures.

Flying motorcycles, lost gold, Smurfy toys, start-up airlines, hand-writing replicators, coupon-printing televisions, 3-D holograms, MTBE plants, diassembled ammonia factories, etc.

You know: the usual stuff.

None of it came to much, partly because I thought it would be unethical to take stock in client companies.

The Dark Wraith looks back quite a bit less nostalgically, now.

Good evening, OddJob. This whole thing is driving me mad. I have waited as long as four minutes to go to the comment screen. Also, editing the Website itself is turning into a nightmare because of how long it takes to get even as far as the editing screen; and from there, if I want to see a preview of changes made to the site, the preview window takes as long as ten minutes just to kick in.

I know that some, but not all, other sites are having major problems off and on, but this is beginning to cause serious issues for me. The whole thing about it is that the servers are overloaded to the max, and Google isn't helping matters at all. Instead of upgrading their servers, what are they doing? They're offering everybody a free 10 Gigabytes of Web storage space for their stupid video, picture, and mp3 files, for God's sake!

That's right. Anyone who asks will get a friggin' ten GIGABYTES of Web space. And Google can't even handle one professional-grade blog.

I swear, I'm going to sell a kidney so I can get off the Google servers by the end of the month. Truth be told, I have put this off too long, and the more I build this blog up and the more regular readers who come here, the more of a pain it's going to be to move it to a real Web host. Fortunately, I control the domain dark-wraith.com, so I am hoping I won't lose too many readers in the transfer; but moving this giant blog and all of its archives is going to be one major task. Furthermore, I want to stick with the Blogger platform because it really is darned nice, so I have to use a Web host that supports Blogger as the interface. That reduces my choices considerably.

I swear, life was easier when we all lived in caves. Each day, you either ate the bear, or the bear ate you. Either way, the day ended without a whole lot of aggravation.
