Fourth Quarter Nominal GDP Growth Rate Revised Upward to 3.8%
By not removing the component of growth that is caused merely by prices of goods and services going up due to inflation, the economy's strength is overstated, since inflation represents no actual increase in the value of goods and services produced by an economy; instead, inflation merely represents the economy's adjustment of real prices to the excess supply of money over what the economy actually needs to function properly.
Inflation is typically measured by three standard methods, along with several adjustments with two of those methods. The consumer price index (CPI) measures the effect of rising prices on a market basket of goods that a typical American household would purchase; and the producer price index (PPI) measures the effect of rising prices on a market basket of goods at the wholesale level.
A variation on each of these is called the "core," which does not include food and energy price level changes. This core rate is considered useful for short-term analyses because food and energy prices tend to swing quite a bit both up and down from week to week and even from month to month. However, over a longer period of time, the effects of price level changes in these sectors should be included, in part because of their significant impact on the overall budgets of households and business, and in part because the short-period swings tend to smooth one another out, allowing underlying trends in the price levels of food and energy to show themselves. The Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan, has indicated in the past that he favors looking at core rates, which indicates that he does not consider the food and energy price changes facing consumers and businesses as particularly worthy of concern. Whether or not he understands the large amount of consumer and business budgets that are used to pay for items from these sectors is not entirely evident, however.Dark Wraith CyberGloss
The "market basket of goods" is a collection of goods and services that approximates most of what a typical household or business would buy. The total cost of this hypothetical shopping cart is calculated each month to track the changes in the overall cost of living.
Along with the CPI and the PPI as means of measuring the extent of inflation affecting an economy, a third measure is the GDP deflator, which essentially measures the extent to which one year's GDP has risen over the previous year's as a result of relative price changes. Some economists favor the GDP deflator over the CPI and the PPI because the deflator doesn't rely on a perhaps arbitrary "market basket" of goods and services to calculate inflation; instead, it looks merely at the overall Gross Domestic Product of one year relative to the Gross Domestic Product of the previous year. The main drawback to the deflator is that, by not at least attempting to see what price changes are doing to some representative market basket of goods, it ignores the reality that consumers and businesses actually do spend money on goods and services, not on some broad structure far beyond their decision-making control like the entire economy.
Regardless of what measure of inflation is used, the basic calculation of real growth is quite simple: the rate of inflation for a given period is deducted from the nominal rate of growth for that period.
What remains is how much real growth occurred during the period. As a simple example, suppose a worker gets a five percent raise in pay, while inflation is running at four percent. This means that the worker really received only a one percent pay raise in real terms, since the other four percent of his raise does nothing but keep his ability to pay his usual bills right where it was before. In other words, the four percent part of his pay raise does nothing but compensate him for the four percent erosion of his raw purchasing power.Dark Wraith CyberGloss
The term "nominal" means that the effect of inflation is included. Nominal values are what households and businesses actually see. So-called "real" values are evident only after inflation is subtracted out.
And so it is with an economy in the large. By reporting a nominal growth rate of 3.8 percent, the observer does not know how much of that growth rate was merely the result of prices rising without any real compensation of the economy for more goods and services and for more value in those goods and services.
But as far as what inflation rate for the last quarter of 2004 to subtract from the nominal growth rate in order to obtain the real growth rate over the period, that could be open to some disagreement. By using the CPI or the PPI, the somewhat arbitrary nature of the market basket of goods could distort the true picture of what inflation was doing at the macroeconomic scale. Moreover, choosing the CPI ignores effects of price level changes at the producer level that might not get passed alongat least, not right awayto consumers. But by using the PPI, the impact on households of rising price levels is ignored, and households constitute almost two-thirds of all economic activity in the U.S. By using the GDP deflator, although there is no issue of whether wholesale or retail prices are being considered, the underlying effect on the actual shopping cart full of goods and services for which people and companies pay becomes irrelevant, even though what that shopping cart full of items costs is very real and very relevant to the people and businesses that must budget and spend actual money.Dark Wraith CyberGloss
The consumer price index measures inflation at the retail level; the producer price index measures inflation at the wholesale level.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index Website, the consumer price index for the fourth quarter of 2004 indicated an annualized inflation rate during that period of 1.1 percent. Deducting this from a nominal growth rate of 3.8 percent for the same period would mean that the real annualized growth rate of GDP for the fourth quarter was 2.7 percent.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Producer Price Index Website, the producer price index (at the finished goods stage of production) for the fourth quarter of 2004 indicated an annualized inflation rate during that period of 1.6 percent. Deducting this from a nominal growth rate of 3.8 percent for the same period would mean that the real annualized growth rate of GDP for the fourth quarter was 2.2 percent.
And finally, according to a recent Wachovia report, the GDP deflator for the fourth quarter of 2004 indicated an annualized inflation rate during that period of 1.5 percent. Deducting this from a nominal growth rate of 3.8 percent for the same period would mean that the real annualized growth rate of GDP for the fourth quarter was 2.3 percent.
Although these three estimates of the real annualized growth rate of the U.S. economy vary somewhat, they all point to an economy whose real growth of value in its total output was considerably less than what the Commerce Department reported and the mainstream news media repeated without critical review. While the Bush Administration and the mainstream news media may attempt to gloss over the fundamental weakness the United States economy was displaying by the end of last year, it is worth noting that a more accurate presentation of the reality of lackluster growth of the economy would allow both lawmakers and citizensand possibly even the Federal Reserve, as wellto have a better understanding of the challenges that lie ahead for an economy increasingly suffering from job losses, rising interest rates, and eroding confidence in the dollar overseas.

So, the Commerce Department can use accurate numbers and be technically correct but intellectually dishonest?
wiseguy
Good morning, Wise Guy.
I believe the term now in vogue for that skill is "leadership."
The Dark Wraith should have noted that in the CyberGloss.
From my time postng as a liberal on mainly conservative sites, and
from my reading of the several Bush conservatives on the more liberal site I hang at over at Delphi, intellectually dishonest =republican, so are we surprised in a Republican controlled everything?
Figures don't lie but liars figure is extremely appropriate. They've been perfecting their technique for years- read the anti-gay "statistics" they quote, then look at the actual studies. And it matters not if you can mathematically prove them wrong. They simply repeat their figures louder. I'm not sure if this is because of a failure in the schools, or due to the growth in homeschooling or simply the failure of the conservative mindset to wrap their minds around any thing factual that does not fit with their pre-conceived notions.
Good afternoon, Wild Clover.
I despair at the lack of critical analysis in today's world. The news media is entirely irresponsible in its reporting of "news" it gets from government. It drives me to distraction that matters as simple as what was in the post above are treated as "fact" for cut-and-paste journalism, rather than as grist for the mill of educating the public. The best for which we can hope these days is that a few issues will show up in the Talking Heads shows, where boring men wearing ties vie for which of them will be the most effective in convincing the viewers that the subject matter is trivial because only boring men in ties seem to know what it's all about. Worse is that the Talking Heads With Bad Ties producers seem to think that "balance" has something to do with allowing Right-wing polemicists a chair at the Normal People table, thereby giving legitimacy to what in another age would have rightly been put in a country asylum and treated with daily grape juice enemas and electro-shock therapy. (And no, electro-shock never helped anybody, but it sure teaches a person who's boss.)
Education, Wild Clover. Even if The Dark Wraith Forums were to be read by only one or two people, that's one or two people who know not only that they are the victims of factual lies, but now they know something far more important: the the truth really is available; but part of the truth isn't "out there," somewhere; it's inside the mind, where reason and knowledge may come together to become wisdom.
The Dark Wraith blogs forward.

The Dark Wraith grumbles.
The critical thinking skills in this country are downright scary. As you note, it can be traced all the way to grade school: If we don't learn how to think, how to ask questions, or how to understand in context, we're (the royal we) screwed.
Somewhere along the line, journalism schools started teaching students that looking like a journalist (i.e. blonde, perky, fake) was more important than thinking or (gasp!) writing like one. And most people really don't see the difference anymore. As a result, we're going to hell in handbasket of our own ignorant doing.
Good afternoon, John.
Years ago, when I first started teaching, I would occasionally have a journalism student in one of my classes. Recall that I teach across the curriculum, so I see students in math, economics, business, computer, and English classes.
I don't see journalism students in any of my classes, anymore; and I cannot recall the last time I had one. Your comment brought that to my notice.
I swear, the last time I had a journalism student was back in the mid-1980s, and that was in a remedial math class.
Good Lord.
The Dark Wraith grumbles rather loudly.
The CultureGhost thanks The Dark Wraith for the link supplied in the comments section. Yes, lengthy, but well worth the read.
The CultureGhost, an amateur student of 20th century military history and avid collecter of military war games (thousands of cardboard counters arrayed on a sea of paper maps) does not foresee a successful outcome to the Iran scenario.
Good evening, Culture Ghost.
For those of you who haven't stopped over at the Culture Ghost's crypt of late, over there I posted the link to a truthout.org article concerning the international nuclear weapons components market that flourished for years, largely because of Dr. A.Q. Khan of Pakistan.
You can go to the articles, which were published today by the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post, by clicking on this link.
Of considerable interest to me was the repeated mention in the Los Angeles Times article about the government's obsession with monitoring Dr. Khan's network while being afraid to roll it up, lest more information be foregone in cleaning up the festering, worldwide bazaar. Note especially the brief mention of the State Department in the article.
All of this points right to Brewster-Jennings, Inc. having been somewhere near dead center in the on-going investigation; and yet, the article doesn't once mention Valerie Plame and her work tracking nuclear weapons of mass destruction.
And while I'm on it, note in the article the passing mention of about "a dozen" Middle Eastern and African countries being interested in nuclear weapons technology. Gee. Where was that country to which Ms. Plame got the CIA to send her asset... I mean, her husband on a mission to debunk a phony letter about Saddam Hussein trying to procure yellowcake?
Notice also that the Los Angeles Times didn't even hint that there was a South American country right smack at the top of the nations on their way to becoming nuclear states. Where in the world did that country get its technology? Although it's fine to give a rogue's gallery tour of the nations trying to go nuclear, why the utter silence on the South American nation whose program is scaring the crap out of friend and foe alike down there?
Maybe I'm just imagining things. Lord knows, it wouldn't be the first time. Once, I imagined that I was the host of the most popular news and commentary blog on the Internet. Reality returned to me when I found out where this blog actually ranks among the 22 million or so.
The Dark Wraith has mixed feelings about this reality-based lifestyle.
[And I still can't figure out how they got that my ranking was negative infinity minus one!]
And by the way, Peter of Lone Tree, thank you for the e-mail message referring to the on-going discussion over on AMERICAblog about Mr. Guckert.
Although I no longer visit AMERICAblog, and although I am dead-set against joining the Gannon/Guckert howl, I can't stand it when an excellent conspiracy theory emerges from an otherwise sleazy little sex scandal.
And boy-o-boy! is there a beautiful gem starting to show up. That one poor, hapless commenter over there was trying his darnedest to get someone—anyone—to grasp the connection between young Mr. Gosch (late of the Reagan/Bush I-era male prostitution ring) and Mr. Guckert. The commenter was getting shot down by all of the "reasoned" voices on the thread who didn't want to go near that weirdness. (As if discussing Mr. Gannon and his White House/GOP/Talon News/M4M escort service stuff qualifies as timid, theology seminar talking points.)
Unfortunately, that conspiracy-theorist-in-the-making has it only about a third right. You see, Mr. Gosch isn't Mr. Guckert, but Mr. Gannon very well might be Mr. Gosch. Figure that one out, and you're about halfway there.
The other part of the conspiracy theory involves the work of a certain world-renown minister who had a touring choir girls group that entertained and compromised no small part of the political and military mid-echelons in the '80s. (His whole game was finally shut down upon his convenient and most fortunate indictment and subsequent conviction on unrelated matters.)
Oh, Lordie! I'm out of breath. This conspiracy theory stuff just gets the ol' heart a-pumpin' a mile a minute.
It's time to settle down, now, and stop ranting about sheer nonsense that isn't anything but pure fiction.
The Dark Wraith gets back to work on serious stuff.
Perhaps that's the real figure for the last quarter's GDP. Right figures, wrong places?
Naw.
I leave you for the night with two names: James P. Gannon & Jeff Gannon.
The CultureGhost wonders why the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has not adjusted their clock in recent weeks...
And why is the Iran-Russia nuclear fuel deal being paid scant attention? More airtime was devoted to Martha Stewart amd Michael Jackson than to a deal which may reshape the Middle East politically and geographically (envision a large smoking crater or two)...unreal. All of it.
The CultureGhost will now shop online for iodine tablets. Anyone have a pattern for radioactive gear for cats?
So, the Commerce Department can use accurate numbers and be technically correct but intellectually dishonest?
Wiseguy,
Absolutely! From such eternal verities was born the quip that there are three kinds of falsehoods: lies, damn lies, and statistics.
Did you ever read Macbeth, or did you ever learn about any of the ancient Greek myths? Both "the Scottish play", and also some of those old stories contain prophetic messages that apply directly to their story lines. These particular prophecies speak 100% truth, yet never speak "truthfully"!
Irony is nothing new!
- oddjob
Oddjob,
It seems to me I have read stories somewhere that appeared to fulfill their own prophecies, even if the characters involved were narcissistic fatalists with no real spine of a will to combat forces around them.
I remember a paper in high school we were required to write regarding a situation where a bad decision caused a good outcome (alluding to the story we were given to read in making our points, which I did not allude to because the story was unrealistic). I stated that even though bad things can happen to us, good will not magically flow from it. I said something to the effect that we shouldn't have to get struck by lightening in order to effect good in this world. My teacher, understanding as she was, wrote on the back saying while I didn't stay on topic, she was impressed that I offered quite an argument. I can't remember if she gave me an A or marked it unresponsive.
Through personality profiling and through statistics and through economic habits and through religious habits, the thought spies arrogantly pull numbers out of their ears and smugly think they have people's inward being down to an algebraic formula that allows no variables.
After all that, I still see the necessity of prophecies, especially when it is noted that if you do X, then Y will happen. But Y doesn't have to happen. The neocons want Y to happen, but they don't bother seeing that it is optional whether they do X or not.
The Jews were sold into slavery as foretold because they couldn't get their act together.
But Ninevah repented.
wiseguy
What makes the plots of Macbeth and of Oedipus (probably the most prominent of the Greek myths I was thinking of, and also the subject of three major plays of ancient Greece, which are still performed today, BTW) so intriguing is that it becomes impossible to separate cause from effect after a while, and by the end it becomes impossible to (but endlessly fascinating to speculate about) decide whether what happened was a fulfillment of prophecy or a collection of decisions which were designed to force a particular outcome, and yet necessarily failed while simultaneously succeeding.
The conundrums abound!
- oddjob
Discussing cause and effect is good only to the extent that we learn from it. If we don't, it's just a useless philosophical exercise.
wiseguy
Agreed, except that sometimes what seems like a "useless" excercise can (if you let it) change your perceptions about what causes what and what affects what. In so doing, you do indeed learn, but what you learn is a lot more enigmatic than some morality lessons are (more akin to pondering Jonah's behavior than Nineveh's).
- oddjob
I don't think something is more impressive merely because I don't understand it.
There are certain points of view I'd rather not know. There are certain people's minds I'd rather not get into, for my health's sake.
Any hinting of needing to "open the mind" brings out my wary eye. It sounds all too familiar from those who attempted to make me and people like me into "blank slates" so we would continue to trust not the process, but our immediate superiors.
Liberal, be careful. The neocons have that unitarian mindset more under wraps than you're giving them credit for.
That may be a reason neocons have a problem with gays. Competition.
wiseguy
Well said, Wiseguy.
What you've said reminds me of Paul Levy's work on the subject of Bush's malignant egophrenia and how it could be and probably is contagious. While soliciting ballot nomination signatures last year I was confronted by a fellow with that "mad look" who asked me if I'd found Jesus. I remember feeling not so much physical as psychic fear, dreading contamination.
Please don't refer to me as "Liberal".
1) I'm not.
2) If that's all you think of me as you have a lot to learn (should you choose to think it worthwhile to do so.)
- oddjob
Peter, I'm glad you understand.
"Inclusive" groups aren't what they're cracked up to be.
wiseguy
Now I'm confused --- where did I suggest that you participate in some kind of group think designed to brainwash you?
That wasn't what I was intending at all. I'm sorry if I wasn't more clear.
-oddjob
Oddjob,
I was talking to Peter. But you're welcome to identify with it if you wish.

G'night.
I had no words to say. I just moved on top of her and hugged her right from top to bottom.
My naked body wanted to feel every inch of her body, and I was caressing her all over like mad.
free tiffany lolita soon began to respond with equal vigor, Her right palm reached my rigid japanese blowjob and began pumping it slowly.
I was so damn horny, but I did not want to waste my semen, just masturbating. I wanted more...I wanted to fuck my cousin there and then.
"Oh free lolita porn...this is too much...I don't think I can keep my promise...please let me remove your panty and let me feel my kiddy sex fuck on your pussy"...I pleaded.
To my utter surprise, without any resistance, free pedo tpg raised her hips, and in a swift action removed her panty.
"You will only feel your pedo russian around my pussy...not inside..OK?" Jenna Jameson Porn insisted.
I almost got angry, and said "OK, but let me play with your tits at least," and moved my pedophile fucking towards her cleavage.
I had no patience to seek her permission. I just pulled her bra straps and and quickly exposed he huge melons.
My mouth instinctly reached her left breast while my right hand was at her right tit. I sucked her like an infant,
expecting to find milk, while my palm was squeezing and kneading her other tit.

She loved her brother so much. He was older than her, 23, and she was just 19. they got along great and did most everything together. free bbs lolita preteens took a year off of school and was going to go away to the collage a few hundred miles away in a big city. Their town was small and Kitty had never lived in a big city. She was scared to move there all by herself. She especially was afraid to lose her brother.
"You aren't losing me, Kitty, I will be right here, right here waiting for you to return. I will call you and write to you if you like..."
She interrupted Jarod,
"Of course I want to keep in touch! I wish dad didn't need your help on the ranch, I wish you could come with me."
free bdsm personals pouted and lowered her head. Her brother, Jarod, lifted it with one finger and smiled,
"If you keep that lip out there a bird might land on it and shit in your mouth..."
They both laughed. She always laughed so much around him. Kitty hugged him tight and he held her close, they both wanted to stay in the moment forever. However, dad called down the stairs and they finished their morning rituals before they went out to take care of the animals.
She was already dressed and was in the bathroom brushing her teeth as her brother got dressed in his room. He took his boxers off while the door was cracked slightly open and Kitty peeked at him between the door to his bedroom and the frame. All she could see as a well toned, tight as hell ass. She had seen him naked when they where younger and experimenting with the world, but he used to be chubby. Now he was sculpted, as was she, from working hard on the ranch.
She ran the toothbrush on her teeth slower as she stared and soon was just standing there sucking on the end of it. He pulled his jeans up and threw on a t-shirt and she backed away into the bathroom to finish. As she was washing her face he came up behind her, pressing his body against her back in order to reach in front of her to get his own toothbrush. His crotch pressed firmly on her ass and she felt a little tingle go through her body. She never thought of it as sexual but it made her a little damp. This was her brother, somebody whom she loved, not a dirty man off the streets bent on getting in her pants. The thought of a twisted stranger trying to fuck her made her smile and her nipples got hard. She was normally a very dirty girl in bed. (and very rarely did she use a bed at all!)
free big tit videos smiled down at his sister while she dried her face and he put toothpaste on his toothbrush. He could smell her free hardcore teen sex, it smelled like strawberries. He loved that smell. Sometimes he would use her shampoo so he could smell strawberries all night. She did the same thing. Kitty would sometimes put a dab of his cologne on her neck so she could smell his scent all night. They never told each other this, or anybody else for that matter. People just wouldn't understand.
They went out early in the morning before breakfast and started chucking hay from a truck into the horse pasture. It was misty out and a loud thunder grew in the hills beyond. It was the beating of many hoofs. A few whinnies and snorts where heard as the horses drew closer. Soon their black outlines where seen galloping and throwing their heads up and down and side to side as they came. Kitty drove the truck off a few yards away from the sinuous mass of pure strength and wild hearts as they closed in on the food. The stallion trotted around the food, watching his mares and foals carefully, then he pushed into the crowd to eat with them. The matriarch of the group was pushing her way in next to the stallion and they nuzzled each other gently then they continued eating.
Kitty and Jarod smiled as they drove off to the barn to clean up the loose hay off the ground that they spilled from the bails. As they worked, Jarod told his sister dirty jokes he read online,
"A guy comes home from work feeling bad about what he had done there. He lays and ponders his actions for a while. A voice in his head tells him, 'it is okay, a lot of doctors have sex with their patience.' He starts to feel a little better then another voice in his head said, 'yes, but you are a veterinarian!'"
They both laughed, though he tried to keep a straight face to add to the humor. Kitty grabbed a handful of loose hay and threw it at him. He ducked and grabbed some of his own, tossing it at her. They laughed and threw hay, getting covered in it and soon she jumped on his back as he went to get more. He spun them both around and they fell to the ground in a pile of the yellow hay laughing and wrestling.
free black sex chat pinned Kitty down under him and they stopped laughing. They where breathing hard and their hearts where pounding. They looked into each other's green eyes and smiled shyly. They had just transformed into virgin lovers, touching the opposite sex for the first time. All the thoughts of being apart drifted away and they where in the moment. Nothing else existed but them, they had each other.
He bent his head down and kissed her softly on the lips. Jarod pulled his head back to make sure she wasn't going to protest and she lifted her free lolitas teenie galleries head up and kissed him back. He slid his hands under her and held her tight as they started kissing heavier, passionately and fervently. Their tongues explored, each in the other's mouth. It was unlike any kiss either of them had ever had. This was pure passion, love and trust.
Jarod moved his hands down and pulled her shirt up, moving his fingers to the front to touch her firm, round, perky tits. Her nipples where rock hard as he touched them. Her breasts where so soft and smooth. Kitty arched her back slightly and slid her own hands up his shirt, feeling his bare chest. He was hot and she could feel his heart pounding, hers was, too. Their hearts thumped away in their chests so hard – like the beating of the wild horse's hooves on the morning damp ground.
They managed to pull each others' shirts off between heavy kisses and he deftly undid her bra from the front clasp. Her tits fell out and her hard nipples stared up at him. He lay his body on top of hers slightly so she could just feel his skin on her nipples. It drove free interracial sex wild. Jarod pressed his hips against hers and pushed his hardening cock into her wet pussy through their pants.
He started to unbutton her jeans as he kissed a path from her lips to her jaw, across her collarbone and between her tits. He licked and sucked each pink nipple, nibbling at times. Then he made his way down further to her tummy and hips. When he got down there he had her pants unbuttoned and pulled halfway down her upper thigh. He kissed and bit her hip bones and looked at her light brown fur patch that lay peeking over the underwear and jeans that he was sliding off.
